THE GERSHWINS' PORGY & BESS (II)

Una sinopsis musicada

ACTO I
escena 1
Catfish Row es un barrio pobre de Charleston, habitado por gente pobre, conocido allí como el Gullah de los negros. Al caer la tarde, los vecinos salen a sus porches. Jasbo toca el piano. Algunas parejas bailan. Clara canta a su bebé una nana llamada Summertime:



Algunos hombres juegan a un juego miserable. Porgy, un mendigo, tira de su carrito. Los hombres se ríen de él por mostrarse dulce con Bess, la novia de Crown, el matón del barrio, pero Porgy responde que a él no le ablandan las mujeres porque cuando Dios creó a los mendigos lo hizo para que él estuviera solo.

Llegan Crown y Bess. Crown está borracho. Se pelea con uno de los hombres, matándolo con un gancho de los que se usan para coger los sacos de algodón. Crown huye. Se oyen las sirenas de la policía. Bess llama a varias puertas pidiendo refugio. Sólo un hombre le ofrece entrar a cambio de marcharse con él a Nueva York. Bess rehúsa. Porgy le abre la puerta de su casucha mientras la mujer del hombre muerto, Serena, le llora.

ACTO I
escena 2
La policía irrumpe en el velatorio del asesinado. Buscan al asesino. Acusan a Peter, el vendedor de miel y se lo llevan como testigo material. Serena, afligida, canta My man's gone now:



ACTO II
escena 1
Un mes más tarde, al comienzo de la época de los tornados. Porgy es feliz porque Bess vive con él. Por primera vez en su desgraciada vida, se siente feliz. Canta I got plenty o'nuttin:



Un falso abogado visita a Porgy. Le quiere hacer pagar el divorcio entre Bess y Crown. Bess asegura que nunca se casó con Crown, pero Porgy paga de todas formas. Otra visita: un antiguo patrón de Peter se ofrece a pagar su fianza. Mientras el hombre habla, un buitre sobrevuela el lugar. Mala señal, explica Porgy.

La gente de Catfish Row prepara un picnic religioso en la Isla Kitiwah. Porgy y Bess irán juntos. Felices, se cantan el uno al otro lo que sienten en Bess, you is my woman now:



Bess manifiesta su temor a que en la Isla de Kitiwah esté escondido el asesino Crown, pero todos la animan a ir de todas formas. El día promete fiesta y un paréntesis entre las preocupaciones.

ACTO II
escena 2
En la Isla de Kitiwah, todos cantan y bailan. El traficante amigo de Crown dice a la multitud que lo que leen en la biblia no es necesariamente como está escrito (It ain't necessarily so):



A punto de embarcar de vuelta, Bess se queda sola un instante y Crown aprovecha para obligarla a ir con él. La esconde entre los matorrales y el barco zarpa sin ella.

ACTO II
escena 3
Una semana más tarde, el marido de Clara sale a pescar. Bess ha regresado, pero está enferma y delira. Serena reza por ella. Por fin, Bess confiesa a Porgy que fue atacada por Crown. Porgy es tajante: Cuando Crown aparezca, será asunto mío (When Crown comes, that's my business).

El viejo Peter sale de la cárcel y los vecinos le cantan Here comes the honeyman. Porgy entra en escena feliz, cantando I loves you, Porgy justo cuando el viento anuncia la llegada del primer huracán:



ACTO II
escena 4
La tormenta se cierne sobre Catfish Row. Los habitantes del barrio se reúnen atemorizados en la casucha de Serena, cantando y rezando. En lo más álgido de la tormenta, Crown aparece, interrumpiendo los cánticos con una canción obscena. A través de la ventana, Clara ve el barco de su marido destrozado por la tormenta. Sale al exterior y Crown la sigue.

ACTO III
escena 1
Por la tarde, la tormenta ha pasado. Clara ha muerto, al igual que su marido y otros pescadores. Bess canta una nana al bebé de Clara. Las mujeres lloran. Mientras, Crown, buscando a Bess, trata de entrar en la casa de Porgy, pero el mendigo lo está esperando. Tras la pelea, arroja el cuerpo del matón en medio de la calle.

ACTO III
escena 2
A la mañana siguiente, se presenta la policía, pero nadie en Catfish Row quiere hablar. Sabiendo que Porgy conocía a Crown, le piden que identifique el cuerpo, pero Porgy es demasiado supersticioso y tienen que obligarlo a ir. El traficante convence a Bess de que Porgy acabará en la cárcel o de que será colgado. Le ofrece su "polvo feliz" y le canta en There's a boat dat's leavin' soon for New York la buena vida que podrían llevar juntos:



Bess huye a la habitación de Porgy. El traficante le echa la bolsa de droga por la ventana y, finalmente, ella se rinde, sale y lo toma del brazo.

ACTO III
escena 3
Días después, la policía devuelve a Porgy al barrio tras detenerlo por negarse a identificar a Crown. Animado, llama a Bess (Oh, Bess, where's my Bess?):



Todos dudan si comunicarle a Porgy que Bess se ha ido, creyendo que nunca la volverá a ver. Porgy pregunta en qué dirección está Nueva York y afirma que se dirige allí en su busca. Montado en su carrito, Porgy sale del barrio.

SUMMERTIME

Standards vol.2

Largo y cálido verano de jazz. Hace calor en el Sur. Calor como para dormitar. Apetece una cervecita y una nana. Qué contraste, ¿no? En Andalucía somos así. Dormitar. Pongo el disco por el segundo corte. Lo siento por la introducción. Esta versión comienza con tiento, con tensión contenida. No todas las nanas se cantan en dormitorios de color rosa. De repente, la trompeta irrumpe con valentía, épica, pero con una (apetecible) languidez. La orquesta acompaña con un colchón que es el contraste perfecto para esa forma tan de New Orleans de tocar que nunca abandonó Satchmo.


Entonces se oye la voz de Ella: "Summertime, and the living is easy. Fish are jumping and the cotton is high..." Nadie le ha puesto tanta tristeza a una canción tan dulce. Cantar cosas bonitas cuando se está triste es muy difícil. Cada inflexión de su voz es una queja contenida. El drama lo pone la voz de Satchmo en la estrofa siguiente.

Creo que ésta es la versión más ruda (a pesar de orquestal) de las que se han grabado de "Summertime". La letra es un poema de DuBose Heyward al que George Gerswhin puso música, como todo el mundo sabe, para su ópera Porgy & Bess, una historia de amor ambientada en un deprimido barrio negro (Heyward invitó a Gershwin a su casa de Folly Beach para que observara las costumbres de los negros) de trágicas consecuencias. Considerada una obra menor por el carácter popular de su música (o quizás por el mundo en el que está ambientada) Porgy & Bess no se consideró en América como una auténtica ópera hasta 70 años después, a pesar de ser la ópera de un autor americano más representada del siglo XX. 

Terminada en agosto de 1935, dicen que Gerswhin releyó las 700 páginas de partituras y exclamó: "Esta música es tan maravillosa que no puedo creer que la haya escrito yo". Al año siguiente la grabó Billie Holiday, ¿qué exclamaría Gershwin al escucharla?

En 1959 se estrenó una película sobre esta ópera con Sidney Poitier en el rol de Porgy. Obtuvo el Globo de Oro al mejor musical. Esto expandió la fama de la obra por todo el mundo y hoy "Summertime" es quizás el estándar más versionado de cuantos se oyen en los repertorios de jazz (en esta página hay una lista de 4.000 versiones, no todas de jazz).

Aunque el álbum Porgy & Bess es uno de mis preferidos de Miles Davis (y Gil Evans), su versión de "Summertime" no es mi favorita. Quizás yo no tenga una versión favorita de esta canción. Es más, suelo desvincular este tema del resto de la obra de Gershwin. Es una canción que tiene vida propia, un standard en toda regla. Y todas las versiones me devuelven la misma sensación de paz, de esa fluidez que licua el verano en un río cálido que pasa lentamente...

STING

El crooner rubio

En 1985 el cantante de The Police sorprendió al mundo con un primer disco en solitario en el que el 90% de los músicos de estudio eran jazzmen. Brandford Marsalis era una de las luminarias que aparecen en los créditos de aquel disco titulado The dream of the blue turtles. Al año siguiente, el tema instrumental que da título al álbum fue nominado a los Grammys como mejor interpretación instrumental de jazz. A los que seguíamos a The Police, nada de esto nos traía de nuevo; sabíamos que Sting comenzó en combos de jazz como los Phoenix Jazzplayers y la Newcastle Big Band, y que cuando llegó a The Police provenía de un grupo de jazz fussion llamado Last Exit que llegó a tocar en el Festival de Jazz de Pau (Francia) y en el de San Sebastián, y habíamos visto a este inglés rubio improvisar con el bajo acústico en una escena de la película Stormy Monday, donde interpretaba al dueño de un club de jazz. Dos años después, el mismo Gil Evans colaboró en un tema de Sting: "Little wing", incluido en su álbum ...Nothing Like The Sun (1987).

Aparte de esta nómina de instrumentistas de jazz que han participado a sueldo en sus giras y discos, Sting ha llevado a cabo colaboraciones muy puntuales con músicos de jazz al margen de sus discos. Aparece en el último de Herbie Hancock, pero todos recordamos apariciones como en el insufrible "You’re under arrest" junto a Miles Davis o su participación vocal en "It Ain’t Necessarily So" de la versión que Joe Henderson hace de Porgy & Bess, e incluso ha introducido composiciones jazzísticas instrumentales en sus álbumes, como la citada "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" o la cara b "Ghost in the Strand". Recientemente, no son pocos los jazzmen que han grabado (con o sin Sting) temas suyos. Particularmente curiosa (aunque no 100% jazzy) es la recopilación Verve plays Sting, donde aparecen entre otros Cassandra Wilson, Freddy Hubbard, Dianne Reeves y John Scofield.

Aparte de las colaboraciones de Sting en discos de artistas de jazz, estos son algunos de los músicos que han intervenido en los discos de Sting como cantante:

Chris Botti, trompetista (Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Roy Hargrove), con varios discos como líder; Hiram Bullock, guitarrista (David Sanborn, Miles Davis, Gil Evans); Mino Cinelu, baterista (Wayne Shorter, Weather Report, Miles Davis, Bill Evans); Vinnie Colaiuta, baterista con varios discos en solitario (Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones); Gil Evans colaboró con su orquesta y sus arreglos en la versión de Little wing que aparece en el álbum Nothing like the sun (1987); Clark Gayton, trombonista (Hiram Bullock, Jaco Pastorius); Omar Hakim, hijo del trombonista Hasan Hakim (Duke Ellington, Count Basie), había trabajado como baterista de Weather Report del 82 al 85, fecha en que se separaron; Darryl Jones, bajista (Miles Davis, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Steps Ahead, Headhunters); Manu Katché, baterista (Al di Meola, Jan Garbakrek); Kenny Kirkland, pianista (Don Alias, Michael Brecker, Stanley Clarke, Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, John Scofield); Brandford Marsalis, saxofonista, el mayor de los cuatro hermanos Marsalis, había grabado con los Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, entre otros, y ya tenía éxito como líder cuando grabó con Sting; Christian McBride, bajista acústico (Roy Hargrove, Freddie Hubbard, Diana Krall); Janice Pendarvis, vocalista (Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Steps Ahead); Jason Rebello, pianista (Wayne Shorter, Gary Burton); David Sancious, pianista (Stanley Clarke, Steps Ahead, Michael Brecker); Vinx, baterista (Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis).

Aunque en los últimos años Sting viene siendo habitual de festivales de jazz como el de Montreux, el repertorio que toca en estas ocasiones es rock. Para buscar su lado jazzy hay que verlo en concierto o escrutar los créditos de sus discos (especialemente bootlegs). Sin embargo, la conexión de Sting con el jazz es tan profunda que no me resisto a incluirlo en mi nómina de cantantes de jazz. No es un crooner al uso, eso es evidente, pero ha grabado tantos standards...

· "It Ain’t No Necessarily So" (Gershwin/Gershwin) en el disco de Joe Henderson Porgy & Bess (1997)

· "My Funny Valentine" (Rodgers/Hart) en el álbum Sting at the movies (2005)

· "Someone to watch over me" (Gershwin) para la película La sombra del testigo (1987)

· "Strange Fruit" (Allen/White) grabado junto a Gil Evans en el Festival de Jazz de Peruggia de 1987

· "Mack the knife" (Weill/Brecht/Blitzstein) del álbum Lost In Stars: The Music Of Kurt Weill (1985)

· "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" (Mann/Hilliard) en el álbum de Chris Botti Slowing down the world (1999)

· "Ain’t no sunshine" (Bill Withers) lo grabó en el 92 en el concierto de la MTV y junto a David Sanborn en el disco de éste titulado Inside (1999)

· "Round midnight" (Monk) lo ha grabado varias veces, pero me gusta en el álbum de Andy Summers Green chimneys-The music of Thelonius Monk (1999)

· Tres temas: "Angel eyes" (Dennis/Brent), "It’s a lonesome old town" (Kisco/Tobias) y "My one and only love" (Mellin/Wood) para la película Leaving Las Vegas (Mike Figgis, 1995)

· "Windmills of your mind" (Legrand/Bergman/Bergman) en la BSO de El secreto de Thomas Crown (1999), versión del tema con el que Noel Harrison ganó el Oscar a la mejor canción en 1968 en la primera versión de este film.

· "How insensitive" (Gimbel/Jobim) a dúo con Antonio Carlos Jobim en su disco Brasileiro (1995)

· "She walks this Earth/Soberana rosa" (Lins) en el album A Love Affair, homenaje a Ivan Lins (2000)

· "Summertime" (1993) lo interpretó durante la gira Night of the Proms en Los Países Bajos en el 93, con big band.

· "You don’t know what love is" (Raye/De Paul) en el disco del trompetista Guy Barker What Love Is (1998)

· "Nice work if you can get it" (Gershwin/Gershwin) en el disco homenaje The glory of Gershwin.

 

Puede que a muchos les choque, especialmente porque Sting tiende más a la melodía que a la síncopa, pero por todo lo anterior y por esa voz rota que merecería haber nacido negra y en otra época, no tengo dudas al admitir que Sting no es sólo un jazzman de corazón sino que es mi vocalista de jazz, mi crooner vivo preferido.

Luis Escalante es un gran divulgador del jazz. Creador del longevo programa de radio La odisea de la música afroamericana, es autor también de dos libros de investigación sobre los orígenes y el desarrollo del jazz, así como de las músicas que le dieron origen y las que nacieron a partir de él.
